Question:
My sister is 7 weeks pregant, and has had severe pain in her upper and lower mouth. Her dentist has prescribed her an antiboitic. Her pharmacist has told her only to take it for a few days, due to her pregnancy. Now the few days, has passed and her dentist isn't able to see her yet.
What should I tell her to do? The dentist thinks it may now be a abbcess. I have heard that you should not have dental work in the first trimester of pregnancy. Is this true? What are her choices? ...Jason in NY
Answer:
Jason, very true. You should contact her gynecologist for input and
recommendations. She cannot take antibiotics without receiving DEFINITIVE
treatment. If her dentist cannot fit her into the schedule, call an
endodontist (root canal specialist) or oral surgeon (if she desires to remove the teeth).
Pregnancy makes a lot of dental problems ten times worse. It's not safe for your sister to have infections during pregnancy and it is obviously not healthy for the baby. That is why dental problems should be solved before pregnancy. She needs treatment right away, NOT just antibiotics.
