FAQ:  Abcess

Oral Surgery Resources

Question:
Last year I had a swelling above one of my top teeth which went away after a few weeks. It's not a bump like a abcess, but I did have a tooth ache for awile last year. The swelling has now reappeared. I am taking augmentin until I can get to the dentist. Will this antibiotic work for this problem? ... Benson in NY

Answer:
Benson, most probably "about a year ago" you developed an acute inflammation of the nerve in this tooth. Left untreated the infection had killed the nerve leaving dead tissue inside the canal of the root. The newly developed bump is an abscess.

The antibiotic may have a temporary solution. It'll not eliminate the abscess regardless of either you have pain and/or swelling in the future. If you want to save this tooth you need to contact a dentist.

This tooth probably could be saved by cleaning bad stuff inside the canal and isolating the space. The procedure is usually being referred to as a root canal therapy.
