FAQ:  Abcess - Tooth Abscesses

Oral Cancer Screening Laser
Oral Surgery Resources

Question:
I had a bridge that the tooth holding it broke off and got abscessed. I did not have insurance, so it has gone this way for 8-9 months. I finally got insurance, went to the dentist and he pulled it while the infection was still present.

I had always heard that abscess has to be cleared up before extraction. What can happen if the infection travels into my system? I have not been feeling very well and I am concerned. What warning signs should I be looking for? ...Visitor from MI

Answer:
Taking the tooth out relieved the infection...there is really no way to clear up an infection caused by a bad tooth unless you take it out or do a root canal.

I doubt the infection is causing systemic problems, unless your face was swollen and you had cellulitis. Stay on antibiotics for 2 weeks if you are still experiencing problems or have your dentist double check to make sure no other teeth are infected.
