Question:
Abscess vs Anemia: I have an abscess on my upper left side for over two years.
The Oral Surgeon I saw would not treat me until I could bring my anemia in check. I have tried for two years to do so and am unable (even under my primary physicians supervision) to bring the numbers to an acceptable level.
What choice do I have? The abscess cannot be left untreated and the anemia continues unabated.
If a molar has an abscess must it be pulled?
Why can't a root canal be done and the tooth capped if the abscess has been cured with antibiotics? ...Visitor from PA
Answer:
To answer your question more completely would require much more clinical information than you have provided, as I cannot see you, and the Internet is limited.
That said, I feel going over TWO years with a "chronic" dental abscess and not being able to get your anemia under control can have serious systemic consequences. You may have an undiagnosed systemic problem that needs to be treated.
Also, you didn't say what type of treatment the Oral Surgeon was planning to provide for you. Was He/She planning to simply extract your tooth or did it also include placing an immediate titanium dental implant?
In the later case,an Oral Surgeon would most certainly want you to be free of any abscess in that area as well as having your anemia under control.
My recommendation would be to seek out a medical specialist in a teaching hospital setting. Once the cause of your anemia is diagnosed and treated it may help to solve the dental abscess.
Depending on where the abscessed tooth is located taking out the affected tooth may help your body get rid of the residual bacterial infection. If your abscessed tooth is in a cosmetically critical
area of your mouth, (front smile zone) you could have your dentist make up a temporary plastic partial
denture (commonly known as a "flipper") to replace the space that's left until a more permanent solution
can be done.
