FAQ:  Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Denture Allergy? I have had dentures for 6 years and I have been in pain for 6 years.

I have burning gums when my dentures are in. Also gum pain. When I take my dentures out the burning and pain stops after about 1 hour.

I have been to several dentists over the years and even had a second denture made and I still have these problems. Please help me with some answers.

They recently did a biopsy on my gums and found no infection and said it could be an allergy. They want to make me a new denture but they have no plans to use different material. ... Visitor from OH

Answer:
First of all, allergies can be tested for!

After 6 years of pain, I can't understand why you haven't gone to an allergist to have the components and acrylics tested for allergic potential. Sometimes they can take pieces of acrylic and tape them to your skin to look for a reaction without any shots.

So, if you had a true allergy - if it is obvious - bright red gums, sores, puffiness. So you would have an immediate diagnosis. In fact your lips would puff up where the dentures contact your lips as well.

So assuming you don't have these obvious symptoms, the first step is to have the dentist put in tissue conditioners to relax your gums and take the acrylic off the gums. Note: Is there a difference in how your gums look if dentures are left out for 2 days? So, if tissue conditioner and rest don't drastically change the appearance of your gums, it probably isn't an allergy.

You could do a gold denture base. These 18 Karat gold bases are beautiful, not acrylic, and very biocompatible meaning your body won't be allergic to it. The downside is that they will cost thousands of dollars more than a traditional denture. This gold can be on the tissue surface of both dentures (they aren't solid gold).

The last suggestion and the best suggestion is to have implants so nothing sits on your gums. You can have 6-8 implants in the upper arch with a porcelain fused to gold bridge and 5-6 implants in the lower arch with a bridge as well. You should considering finding an experienced implant reconstructive dentist... best of luck.
