FAQ:  Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Black tattooing around gum tissue: I have developed a black tattoo effect around my gum where I have crowns.

I have another gold crown that I have had for years that has not left any discolor. I went to a dentist on the Island and he said that it is from the metal (nickle) in the crown.

He said it is permanent. Is this metal leakage safe? Should I remove these crowns? Can I get rid of the tattooing? ... Visitor from France

Answer:
Nickel allergy will usually manifest itself with red, puffy, blotchy gums that are swollen and bleed easily.

Dark discoloration is usually from an old silver filling that during placement or removal or the crown preparation got pushed into, around and under your gums.

This can often be removed with periodontal surgery and removal of the amalgam pieces.

Is it safe? I am sure it is better to not have leaky fillings under your skin but I can't quote evidence based articles that say it is unsafe.

Silver fillings are still considered a safe material in the U.S.A. but in many European countries it is being banned. Hope this helps.
