Allergic Reactions Ask The Dentist John Purpura

Sensitivity to Bridge:
Ever since I had a tooth extracted and had a bridge placed in my mouth, I have had an excessive amount of saliva on that side. It seems to constantly produce saliva with no relief. The only way I can get it to stop is to wrap chewing gum around the crown.

Could I be allergic to the crown material? My dentist says the crown was permanently cemented and I can not have it removed without destroying the two teeth the crown is anchored to. Help me it is causing me to lose my mind, the constant saliva. ...Visitor from WV

Answer:
I do not have all the information to make a firm recommendation. I will tell you that if the crown is on an upper tooth in the molar region it is likely that it is touching the orifice (opening) to the Parotid gland and may be stimulating it either manually by rubbing or through the material being new and foriegn.

If the crown has been placed on the bottom then you may be stimulating the saliva flow of the sub-lingual or sub-mandible glands due to moving your tongue around the crown to feel it.

In either situation, as time goes on the crown will become more of you and the excess saliva flow should return to normal.
