I'm allergic to metals. Is there any other solution for Implants? ...Visitor from MA

Answer:
Thanks for your inquiry regarding metal allergies. While metal allergies is not a very common occurrence in dentistry, it does occur often enough to warrant attention to the matter.

Most metal allergies in dentistry are related to nickel. Nickel can be found in certain metal alloys that are use in base metal crowns which have little or no noble alloy content. Nickel can also be found in stainless steel posts that are placed in root canal teeth to support a superstructure or buildup material.

However, to my knowledge, I do not know of any documented allergies to medical grade titanium which is used in dental implants and orthopedic surgery.

I would consult with an allergist to determine if you are truly allergic to titanium. If you are, then there are not any other modalities that I can recommend as a substitute for implants other than dentures which are acrylic. Even removable partial dentures have metal frameworks.
