Question:
Have read quite a bit for an against amalgam fillings and feel I would be better without them. What do you think?
Have entire lower right side of mouth with amalgam. Would like to have amalgam fillings removed by a dentist who specializes in the removal. Have read extensively on internet re: removal and it seems that certain procedures must be followed during the removal of these fillings. Like blood tests should be done prior, etc. Is this correct? Or, can my dentist or any dentist do this procedure? ...Wayne in NJ
Answer:
Wayne, I think you're trying to kill a mouse with a bazooka, but if you want to get blood tests go ahead. I don't know too many labs that will give you
anything conclusive for whatever you may be looking for. I have not placed amalgam fillings for over 7 years.
There is some evidence that suggests they may be harmful, but nothing conclusive. There have been reports that some patients with immune problems have cured themselves by removing their amalgam fillings and replacing with composites. There is nothing wrong with replacing them, if you choose to do so. There really are no precautions for replacing them. It's a simple procedure that is done on a routine basis by cosmetic dentists.
