FAQ:  Amalgam Fillings

Video: Amalgam Removal and Replacement

Question:
I have three teeth with amalgam fillings for about 10 years. I read some info about amalgam on Internet. It was reported that lactating women with aged amalgam fillings had increased Hg excretion in breast milk and mercury in amalgam may be harmful for brain/central nervous system development of foetuses/children.

Also, women should have their amalgam fillings removed at least one year in advance of when they intend to become pregnant and discuss the risk with an informed medical doctor or dentist. It looks to me that I have to remove my amalgam fillings right away because I plan to have a baby in 2-3 years. My questions are 1) Is this removal necessary for future pregnancy? 2) What risks it may cause? ...Feirong in ND

Answer:
Some research shows that you may be right, however I don't believe anything is conclusive. Do what you think is best for you. I did replace my wife's amalgams before our first baby.
