Dental Phobia Search: Alternatives to medical management of dental anxiety
Question:
I have a broken tooth on the bottom left side of my mouth. It hurts so much I have been taking Advil, Motrin and other pain meds. I am taking too many pills.
When I go to the dentist I get anxiety attacks. Can you die from getting your tooth pulled or can it cause heart damage if you don't take care of it? It has been close to a year and I can't take it any more. I am 36 years old. ... Visitor from NY
Answer:
Bad Teeth can cause a lot of problems. The bacteria can cause abscesses that can travel down the neck to the chest cavity or up through the sinuses and into the brain. Remember the young boy in NYC that died a
few months back. This type of condition is rare, yet you do need to be seen.
FEAR is just (Fantasizing Events Appearing Real) and anxiety is your reaction to these imagined events.
To conquer this what you need to do is have knowledge about what is to happen and then take the experience in the moment it is happening and not project yourself into an imaginary future.
This is something that will take time and attention from both you and the dentist and will help you get healthy and remain that way. For this more acute situation, there are medications which can be used to help with the anxiety.
In some situations you can go to one of the local hospitals and ask to see the dentist on call, especially if the situation is getting worse. For long term help I would recommend seeking a dentist who
will spend the time which you need to regain total oral health.
