Porcelain Restoration Failures
Poor bonding procedures, old bonding treatments, mismatch of porcelain products for opposing teeth, bruxing, untreated decay or leakage, failure to replace worn out bridgework or crowns can cause almost any degree of devastation to our oral health. The graphic pictures below demonstrate some of the more devastating effects of rapid, cumulative damage that otherwise could have been better managed or controlled.
A 20 something year old female with a long standing history of poor oral hygiene and basic dentistry care. Limited family financial resources prevented getting basic care when it was needed. Orthodontic and occlusal problems, a porcelain crown failure is evident. Good example of how restorative treatment should not be requested until reconstructive needs are completed.

| Ramped tooth decay under old improperly bonded restorations also called white composite fillings. Dental Bonding requires exact precision on every step of the treatment procedure. Any contamination from moisture from the patient's breath, the dentists water supply, air, materials or inadequate decay removal by the dentist and the restorations will fail. The patient was neglectful because the patient could obviously see that damage being done over a period of years and just did not see a dentist. There was so much internal decay to the tooth structure that root canals , crown build-ups and posts were necessary before the porcelain crowns could be placed. The gums tissue also was infected and required non surgical gum treatment. |

| Composite resin veneers on the upper teeth and porcelain crowns and porcelain bridges on the lower teeth, bite was never corrected, cross bite, underbite or end to end occlusion, heavy wear on the upper
teeth because composite veneers are too soft for the lower porcelain and dental enamel also wears faster when porcelain is on the opposing arch. Especially if the porcelain was not polsihed and the patient was not wearing a night guard. The composite resin on the upper teeth has stained and is estimated to be 10 years old. Lower teeth look long due to the bone loss and tooth loss of the four lower incisor teeth. |

| Unbalanced crown to root ratio. Deep overbite, upper teeth missing, bone loss, remaining upper teeth superupted making them very long, black lines at the gumline all of the porcelain crowns on the upper were not coordinated with the porcelain bridges and crowns on the lower. Bad Bite and bad dentistry. The lower teeth are one big bridge that did not fit the teeth well so you can see one of the lower front teeth rotted or decayed right out from under the bridge. |
