Question:
My husband has recently been diagnosed with significant bone loss. The Oral Surgeon has reccommended pulling all of his teeth.
My husband says that he is not experiancing any pain with his teeth the way they are and does not want to to to the "torture" and expense of having all his teeth replaced.
My question is what would the long term effects be of not replacing his teeth now? Will pulling his teeth stop the bone loss? ... Visitor from OR
Answer:
If your husband has advanced gum disease and it can not be treated, it can effect his entire body.
Studies show a link between gum disease and heart disease. Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the treatment of gum disease. They can do a comprehensive examination and advise you of any alternatives to extraction.
Nothing beats having your own teeth as long as they are healthy and don't cause other problems. When teeth are extracted the level of bone decreases over time. The placement of dental implants will maintain the present level of bone. However, implants require home care to prevent inflammation.
Full mouth extraction is a terminal event. Get a second opinion from a periodontist if you have any doubts.
