Question:
Braces for 40% Bone Loss and Splayed Teeth? I am desparate to have a nice smile.
I have a large gap between my front teeth which is highly embarrassing and I won't smile without placing my hand over my mouth. I never smile for photographs and I can't look at people as the first thing that enters my head is 'are they staring at my teeth'.
I've always had a gap but this has splayed even bigger over the years due to periodontitis and my dentist says I have approximately 40% bone loss in areas.
I have had treatment to halt this problem and keep my mouth scrupulously clean.
Can I have braces fitted? I've been advised of the Damon system self ligating braces. Could I ever be a candidate? ... Visitor from London UK
Answer:
Your periodontal condition is probably worsening the gap and will continue to do so until it is treated.
I am not familiar with the Damon system of orthodontic treatment, but would be very careful about moving teeth orthodontically with so little bone support.
I would advise you to find a good reconstructive dentist or prosthodontist to evaluate your situation, especially bone support, and come up with a comprehensive plan for a beautiful smile.
This could include implants or extractions and dentures, which can be comfortable, beautiful and natural looking.
The sooner you get treatment the better because the periodontal disease will continue to erode the bone and worsen the gap.
