Question:
Loss of bone and or cartlidge in gums: I have a question for my father. He has had dentures for years and has always done well until now.
There is nothing left of his bottom gum. The gum is there, but he can wiggle it back and forth. There is no bone or cartlidge in the bottom gum.
He is unable to wear his bottom dentures and when he puts them in to eat, it causes pain. I know it isn't normal to be able to move your gums back and forth, but I don't know if this has a name and I can't find any information about it.
I will appreciate any advice that you can give me so that I can pass it on. His age is 57. ... Visitor from MO
Answer:
I would suggest that your father see an oral surgeon. The loose tissue that he has cannot support a denture. He might be a candidate for bone grafting.
Another possible solution is mini-dental implants, usually 4 small implants across the lower front area that will snap onto a lower denture and support it.
Mini-dental implants do not do well with bone grafting, so you may want two opinions, one from an oral surgeon to replace the bone and another from a dentist who places the mini implants.
