Question:
Speech Problems: I am 19 years old and i have been wearing braces for 5 months now. I have been talking with my tongue out when I say words with the s/z/and x sounds. I have been trying to fix this problem by trying to keep my tongue in but I find it to be rather difficult. I was wondering if you have any suggestions. ...Visitor from NJ
Answer:
The s/z/ & t (sometimes x) sounds are developed by placing your tongue behind your upper front teeth. If your front teeth are being moved, you may find that these sounds require some retraining in order to perfect the way you articulate them.
I suggest that you read out-loud to practice your speech. While most people do not take much effort to adjust to braces, some people can struggle at it. Practice makes perfect. So warm up to a good book and focus on making the sounds properly.
