Question:
Braces change facial features? My orthodontist said that I should wear braces. I have a bad bite and this is causing jaw problems.
My question is, will the after result change the appearance of my lips or other facial features? I wouldn't want my lips to change from full to thin. ...Visitor from CA
Answer:
Your question is an interesting one. You obviously recognize that orthodontics (i.e. tooth movement) CAN result in certain facial changes. For this reason, Orthodontists are required to have a degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
When an orthodontist moves teeth, the soft tissues that drape the teeth will also move to some degree. These changes can be positive and negative, depending on the age of the patient, the willingness of the patient to undergo certain treatment options, and the planning of the orthodontist.
Suffice it to say that you should speak to your orthodontist to discuss what facial changes you can expect.
