Question:
I'm really worried. About 9 weeks ago my jaw started clicking and about 7 weeks ago my jaw locked completely. I've had braces for about a year now and to tell the truth I blame my orthodontist for everything that has happened.
Can having 3 teeth moved and having your teeth moved back or around dramatically cause TMJ? I asked my orthodontist to fix it but he says that there is barely anything that I or he can do about it...help ...Visitor from OK
Answer:
Typically orthodontics does not cause TMJ symptoms. A locking jaw can be two types, locked open and locked closed.
If your jaw was locked open, this can be caused by opening your mouth too wide. The rule of thumb is do not open your mouth more than two and one half finger widths. This includes yawning.
This should prevent your jaw locking open.
