Question:
Re-using a Bridge
I have been diagnosed with decay on the rear of tooth #32, which anchors a 3 tooth bridge. My dentist wants to remove the bridge, do a filling or root canal and replace with a new bridge.
He says the old bridge cannot be used and a new one will be over $3000. Why can't exisiting bridges be re used? ...Visitor from CA
Answer:
Thank you for a great question. Let's back up for a moment.
When God's work did not last you a lifetime, certainly everything man does has an even more
limited life expectancy.
When you get new decay around an existing filling or in this case a crown that is part of a bridge, there no longer is a good seal. The decay has to be removed and this will alter the design or margins
of the crown.
The only choice is replacement with a new custom bridge to fit the new architecture or anatomy. Yours is a very logical question and I hope my answer helps you understand the process. Good luck!
