Question:
Bridge causing Malocclusion?
After a bridge replacement (upper right #2-3-4) and two malocclusion adjustments (i.e., grinding), my teeth still hurt.

My dentist said that he can do some more adjusting/grinding, and then the next step would be for him to make an expensive appliance.

I did not have these problems before I had my bridge replaced and I'm wondering if I should (1) get another bridge from a different dentist, or (2) go with the appliance?

Could another bridge just add to the problem since my teeth have been "re-aligned" via all these "adjustments?" I'm 50 years old and I'm afraid to keep grinding on my teeth. ...Visitor from TN

Answer:
"When you hear hoofs, think of a horse not a zebra." If you had no problems with your bite prior to the placement of the bridge, the bridge is most likely causing the problem.

If the dentist took preoperative study models of your mouth a provisional bridge should be fabricated and temporarily cemented. If the problem is absent than with absolute certainty you know it was caused by the bridge.

If the opposing teeth have been adjusted the problem becomes more complex. Although equilibration(tooth adjustment) is necessary it is a very methodical procedure. Not a haphazard process. The haphazard process is mutilation not equilibration.
