Question:
Bridge Cement - Anchoring Problems:
I have a fixed lower bridge which had soft cement on one side and hard cement on the other. The soft side is lose.

The dentist could not get it off due to the hard cement. I am finding that the loose side is irritating my gums and am wondering what can be done to fix this? ...Visitor from NY

Answer:
The teeth that hold the bridge in is called an abutment. If one of the abutments is loose, it needs to be determined if it is the cement or the tooth itself that is loose.

If it is the cement then care must be taken in removing the bridge to recement. The strong abutment may break or the bridge may get damaged.

If the looseness remains then there is a chance of the loose abutment decaying under the bridge. Often by applying the correct force and using a pneumatic crown remover the bridge can be removed and recemented.
