Bridges Bridgework FAQ Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Bridge Pain - Unable to Chew: About 3 months ago I had two upper, a right and left side permanent bridges put in at the same time.

The right side has a fake tooth attached to a cap on either side. This side hurts off and on. I chew on it and deal with the pain, but it has never been right.

The left side is very bad. It has a fake tooth with one cap with the other side having a cantalever over the other side of the fake tooth. If I push on it with my tongue it hurts and I have never been able to chew on it.

I have been back to the dentist three times to "adjust the bite" but I am really hurting. ...Visitor from WI

Answer:
I am very sorry for your discomfort. Run, don't walk to another dentist in your area for a second opinion.

Your bite is off, or your nerves are inflamed and your bite is off. The fact that your dentist adjusted it 3 times says they know it's off and were trying to fix it.

If adjusting them doesn't make them comfortable, they have to be removed, redone or have root canal therapy performed as needed on some of the painful teeth.

Cantilevering a bridge, puts extra force on the cantilevered pontic(fake tooth). Placing 2 bridges at the same time can be difficult if the temporary bridges weren't carefully made, duplicated by the laboratory for giving you an ideal occlusion or bite, in your final bridges.

If your dentist can't resolve your problems, you should see a general dentist or a prosthodontist that does full mouth rehabilitation for help. Best of luck
