Question:
Bridge - Uneven Contact: I have a 3 unit bridge on my lower jaw (covers my last three teeth). When I close my mouth my last tooth doesn't have full contact with the upper tooth.
The bridge is not cemented permanently yet. The dentist says that if I want the problem corrected - they can put on an additional layer of enamel. I really don't know what to do. I don't want my bridge to be unstable or fracture in the future.
So what is a proper contact between teeth? Should marks on the articulation paper be distributed evenly? Mine were very prominent on the first tooth (unit) of the bridge and hardly noticeable on my last tooth. ...Visitor from NJ
Answer:
Your bridge should hit it's opposing teeth evenly unless their is some reason your dentist has for keeping it out of occlusion.
Is your last tooth being cantilevered off of the two teeth in front of it? Does the upper tooth have a suspected fracture?
Unless this is the case, the dentist should have porcelain (not enamel - that's only on your real teeth) added. I am surprised you know any of this. Your dentist should realize it isn't hitting and send it back to the lab without even including you in the discussion.
If it's not right, it is the job of dentists to fix it. Why is it cemented on temporarily? This is a technique that is never used in our practice.
If your bridge fits and you approve its looks - it should be cemented. Otherwise your temporary bridge should be comfortable until your final bridge is delivered.
