Question:
Porcelain chipping off bridge: I have a perfectlly wonderful bridge 2 crowned teeth attached to metal teeth with porcelain attatched to the last of the bridge 2 crowned teeth.
I noticed the facing on one of my metal bridge teeth is gone. Is there a way to glue a facing on or could a veneer work? ...Visitor from CA
Answer:
If your bridge is intact with no decay around the crown margins and does not need to be replaced for
any reason, it is possible to resurface the cheek side part of the restoration.
If the bridge unit has no porcelain left a composite resin restoration can be bonded to the side of the crown.
If your tooth is vital(not root canaled) it can be numbed and small retention grooves can be made into the side of the metal. Once these mechanical grooves are made, composite resin can be flowed into them to lock in your new filling.
It can be frustrating when a patient breaks off part of the porcelain on a recently placed or older crown or bridge. Whether the crown is made of full porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, with the new bonding techniques available it is possible to prepare the fractured porcelain with special etch and bond the crown good as new.
This is a very conservative method to save an otherwise healthy crown or bridge. However,if too much porcelain has broken off an existing crown of bridge it may need to be replaced.
