Cracked Root: My bridge got loosen and my dentist told me it's a result of two cracked - split roots.
He says that a bridge would never hold and that I would need implants. Is this true? Why can't the root be repaired? ...Visitor from NJ
Answer:
It sounds like you don't trust your dentist's recommendation. If this is a new dentist, you may not have built up any faith yet and may want to seek a second opinion.
That being said, if the roots of the teeth holding your current bridge are fractured or split they cannot be repaired and will need to be removed. The roots of teeth run deep under the jawbone and when a root fractures there is no way to access the area without removing a lot of bone.
Even if there was some way to get to the split root, no repair or bonding of the root could withstand the enormous force generated by normal chewing.
If your tooth roots are fractured, your dentist is correct that dental implants would be a great option to restore the area where the bridge waslost. Titanium dental implants integrate into the jawbone, act like natural tooth roots and help keep the bone from melting away from resorption over the years.
Other options to restore your mouth would be a longer span bridge involving more teeth, or a removable partial denture that comes out at night.
