Question:
Painful bridges when eating: I have six week old bridges.
One covers two root canals, a pontic and a normal tooth. This four tooth bridge is about 6 weeks old and I have pain when I eat hot or very cold food.
They have been "adjusted" several times to fit the bite of an upper older bridge of also four teeth. This pain is also true of a upper bridge of 2 and a pontic.
I also have 10 crowns that are wonderful but hey are induividual and are all porcelain. 25,000 dollars later, I look great but I can't really enjoy eating.
My dentist is making me a bite splint to wear at night as I grind my teeth. ...Visitor from FL
Answer:
When someone has pain to hot and cold, the first thing that comes to mind is an irritated pulp. The nerve inside the tooth is irritated perhaps because the crowns are not sealing the tooth well.
If cut tooth structure is exposed and/or there is leakage, the pulp can become irritated causing sensitivity.
Another factor may be that the teeth or tooth may be irritated from the tooth preparation. When temporary crowns fit poorly, bacteria can leak under the temporaries and lead to sensitivity.
In any event you may need root canal treatment. I would see another dentist for a second opinion.
