Question:
I had my final bridge work done a week ago. It was a 7 way bridge in the front on the bottom.
I have 2 teeth crowned on the left side, and one on the right side. The one on the right is my lower canine.
This has been causing me unbearable pain, throbing, aching and sharp nerve pains in the tooth and also down into my chin. What should I do about it?
I'm guessing a root canal, but will this make my bridgework too weak to hold up on this side since that is the only tooth holding that side of it?
This tooth was sensitive before the procedure was done, which I did let the dentist know before hand. Any advice? ...Visitor from GA
Answer:
I would not overlook biting problems on your right canine. Three crowns should be enough to replace the lower front teeth even though I may have preferred one more crown on the right side.
I would return to the dentist to let him check the bite on your bridge. Contacting on the lower cuspid tooth first would transfer all of the strength of the bite to one tooth and could cause all of the problems you describe. Also, one bite adjustment may not be enough since your lower jaw could change position after the muscles relax and cause the problem again.
Yes, you could need a root canal since this tooth was sensitive before the bridge was placed, but I would have him check the bite in addition to checking the tooth for nerve problems. Even if you need to have a root canal done, this tooth should be strong enough to support the bridge.
