Question:
What is the difference between porcelain fused to metal and porcelain fused to to high noble metal? Also how would I tell the difference between the two by looking at them? When the dentist orders the bridge to be made from the lab, how would he define the one he would like it to be made of? ...Suzane
Answer:
Hi Suzane... porcelain can be baked on various classes of metals:
1- Non precious metals contain no gold or any noble Metal. These metals
are inexpensive with poor marginal adaptation.
2- Semi precious metals. Are from 5 to 50 % gold and/or other noble
metals. These classes of metals are relatively acceptable for clinical use.
3- High Noble Metals contain from 50% to 98% gold and/ or other noble
metals. This class of metals can provide desirable clinical results.
The alloys with more than 75% gold are yellow. For the other alloys a laboratory metallurgic test is required for distinction. This is the most simplified answer to a very complex question.
