Question:
My son fell on the ice when he was 10 years old and broke his two front teeth. One had to have a root canal, the other did not. They put some sort of bonding material on what was left of each tooth and built it up.
He is now 17 and just got out of braces and wants to redo his front teeth which have started chipping away. One of the teeth has now just started turing gray. We live in a small town and our local dentist wants to put crowns on both of the teeth. I feel he is a very good doctor but wonder
if this is the best solution. Should I check in a bigger city to see if there are newer - better alternatives? ...Visitor from KS
Answer:
I understand your concern....
However if the old bonding is breaking down you have to do some type of treatment. Please understand that the treatment done now may not be the last time he ever has to do anything. Practicing now almost 20 years I have seen teeth like this even lost.
If he were my son knowing what I know now I would consider veneers but most likely would proceed with all porcelain crowns. Sometimes we use metal on the front to cover shading problems but usually I stay with porcelain. I would also want to be sure that I had a post in the teeth as well.
This way you have the best chance to appropriately protect the teeth. If you are concerned about how this will look you might ask to see some of the dentist's work that he has done on the front of the mouth. Today it is quite possible to do this kind of dentistry and you are not able to see that
it is anything but natural teeth.
I hope this answered your concerns.
