Question:
Broken Teeth - Speech Pain: After an accident I had my upper left front tooth crowned and my
upper right tooth bonded to fill some parts that were knocked off.
The bonding material comes off every few weeks and I keep having to have it replaced. There was some trauma to my jaw also. Now when I talk my lower teeth contact very hard with the bottom edge and back of my upper front teeth.
It's painful and breaks the restorations frequently. Should I continue having restorations done frequently or try and find a solution for this odd bite? I wear an occlusal splint on my lower jaw. Thanks ...Visitor from London England
Answer:
The problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the traumatized area and/or your jaw joint.
When you talk your front teeth should not touch. There is a gap between your upper and lower teeth several millimeters wide called "freeway space".
The tooth that has bonding material may need a porcelain veneer. Both of the teeth should have provisional (temporary) restoration that allow you to properly function, and are esthetically acceptable.
The provisional restorations are then used to model the final restorations which will give you you a predictable result.
