Question:
I have a molar (right side bottom, 2nd from rear) that has broken off on an angle from the gumline at the front to the top of the tooth at the rear. It has also decayed internally far below the gumline and has developed an infection underneath that I'm currently treating with Antibiotics.

I have had one dentist examine it who recommended extraction but my question is: Do you think if money were no object it would be a better idea to keep the tooth and root canal/fill it or are there other factors I'm not aware of that would make it a better choice to pull it and then get an artificial tooth or crown later on? ...Jeff

Answer:
Jeff, I'm really glad to see that you are seeking the best solution to your problem and not just the most economical one. In dentistry they are most often not the same. The real concern here is "restoreability". Can the tooth be restored with a well fitting crown after all the decay is removed and the root canal is done and is the tissue healthy around the tooth?

It would be unwise to invest in a tooth that is not optimally restoreable when other options such as an implant or a fixed bridge offer a more favorable prognosis. Discuss restoreability with your dentist and have him/her advise you accordingly.
