Broken Teeth FAQ Ask The Dentist Mitchell Pohl Question:
I was wondering what has happened to my tooth. About 2-3 days ago the tooth on the top right (the 4th one in) had chipped a small piece on the back-side of it. Last night I looked at it, and I noticed that a small area of my gum right above the tooth was a little grayish color.

I've been brushing and cleaning my mouth for a while, and today I was eating a hamburger and felt that most of the tooth was missing and the remaining piece of the tooth is grayish in color. It also feels like it is soft when I touch it. It has been hurting for a couple months when I bite on something or eat real fast with it. Would you know what this is and what should I do? ... Mike in FL

Answer:
Mike, it sounds like you better see a dentist. If you were told to have the tooth extracted, I am sure it was for a good reason. Do not delay because your problem could get worse. Nonetheless, it sounds like you have a badly decayed tooth that is broken. Without a clinical exam and an xray it would be difficult to give a definitive diagnosis.
