Broken Teeth FAQ Ask The Dentist Mitchell Pohl

Question:
Hello, I'm trying really hard to find a dentist, but because my credit is less than perfect, no one seems to want to take me. I have a question regarding what's going on with my teeth, but first I wanted to ask if you know of any schools or anywhere, that I can go for treatment, where credit is not an issue and I don't have to pay a lot upfront. I really need my teeth fixed, I am in pain.

Okay, here's what's going on. About a year ago I was told that I needed a to have two root canals on my upper left side, the dentist did the root canals and put a temporary filling inside the huge hole left in my mouth. A few weeks later, I tried to make another appointment, to get a crown, and I was told that the dentist I was going to was on vacation for the summer. She didn't mention this when I had gone in previously. There was no one to take her place. I wasn't in any pain, so I figured that it must be okay to wait.

Well, I finally did get back in to see her, but by the time she was back, my insurance was no longer good. I didn't have any other options at the time and the insurance that I was switched to was not accepted by her office. I tried calling other dentists just to be told that I would have to pay at least $800 in cash, which I did not have, still don't. So, here it is, a little over a year later, and the teeth have broken up, pieces coming out from time to time, the one side is just small and very sharp, constantly cutting my mouth up.

I've recently noticed that one of them has turned black at the top, and the smell and taste are absolutely horrible. I don't know what to do. I've tried calling, and I can make payments, but I just don't have that kind of cash lying around. Please help, I desperately want to have this fixed before I lose all of my teeth. ...Ruthie in FL

Answer:
Ruthie, sorry you are having such problems with your teeth. Let me try and answer your questions.

First of all your teeth will turn black if there is decay in the teeth or if a tooth had trauma. By trauma , I mean if a tooth was hit and became bruised inside the pigment from the blood will be absorbed into the tooth structure. Also a tooth can become discolored from having large silver fillings. However, in your case I am sure it is from decay.

As for your financial situation, you have to understand that most dentists and for that matter most people will not extend credit to someone they don't know. Publix (grocery store) will not let you walk out of their store with $100 worth of groceries under the conditions that you will pay them $20 per week. Even if you went to one of the Dental schools it will still cost you money; it will not be free or convenient.

There are two dental schools in Florida one in Gainesville the other in Fort Lauderdale My advice would be to at least see a dentist and have temporary fillings placed to stop further decay. Save your money and then get it taken care of. Hope I have helped.
