FAQ:  Cracked Tooth

Cracked Teeth Ask The Dentist John Purpura Question:
Pain in top front tooth: 4 months ago while rushing to eat my breakfast cereal so to get to work I hit my front top tooth with the side of a tablespoon pretty hard.

Since then I have a daily mild pain in that tooth. Went to my dentist who shined a light from behind the tooth and did an x-ray and told me he did not see any fracture and that the nerve looked fine and told me he would hate to do a root canal after seeing nothing.

That was that and I live in constant pain and don't know what more to do. ... Visitor from PA

Answer:
4 Months of constant pain is a long time. The tooth may be fractured but due to the bone holding the pieces in place the fracture often does not show up on the x-ray.

Unlike a fractured arm where the muscle pull the two pieces apart thus being easily seen in the X-ray. A new x-ray may show something. Please be advised that depending upon where the fracture is the tooth may not be salvageable and may need to be extracted.
