Question:
Decay in under 5 years: What is the ethical thing for the dentist to do when decay forms underneath a crown less than 5 years old?
Replace free of charge? Give a discount for the replacement? Charge the usual amount? ... Visitor from FL
Answer:
The answer to your question has to be evaluated based upon several factors.
First, one has to assume that the crown was made correctly and fitted the tooth the well. If these factors were correct then one would have to assume that the decay could possibly have occurred because of poor oral hygiene.
If poor oral hygiene was the cause then the dentist should not have to be responsible for replacing the crown. However, if the patient was consistent about in coming in for their hygiene recall appointments, a dentist might consider that and allow a certain percentage off the usual fee.
On the other hand, if the decay occurred because of a poorly fitted crown then one might consider replacing it at no charge or a lesser fee. The only way to know how well the crown fitted the tooth is with an x-ray. I hope this has helped. It is an individual dentist's decision.
