Question:
Bad Crown and Decay in 1.5 years: I had a root canal and crown done about 1 1/2 years ago.
When I went to see my dentist for my checkup this week, she said my best option would be to pull out the tooth, as there are signs of decay underneath.
She said this was caused by a cracked crown somewhere not visible. She said she wasn't sure if the root was cracked, but it looked like it as the grey area followed a curve.
She said it wasn't worth it to redo the crown. I have no pain or discomfort whatsoever, and the crown is not loose.
Are there any other options besides extraction? I'm really upset about this as it cost a lot of money and it is a tooth I need! (first molar bottom) ... Visitor from Alberta Canada
Answer:
I would be upset also if I invested in a RTC, post-core build up and a crown 1.5 years ago, and now the dentist is telling me it's not worth saving and should be extracted.
Something does not sound right. Did this dentist do the root canal?
If so, it may need to be evaluated by an Endodontist (root canal specialist). Since you have no
pain or discomfort and the tooth is not loose, you owe it to yourself to seek a second opinion, by a
SPECIALIST, who can evaluate your tooth.
If by chance the root canal is not totally filled correctly or if there is a cracked root the specialist is the best person to give you an informed assessment of your tooth.
If the Specialist finds that the root canal has a chronic abscess, no fractured root, and can be retreated, I would advise you to find a new general dentist and ask the old dentist to pay the Specialist
to correctly repair your tooth.
