Crowns Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Sensitive tooth after crown: I had a temporary crown in and had no pain or sensitivity.

Now that the crown is in, it is sensitive to cold. They already checked the bite, ground it down a bit and it is still bothering me.

I did not get a shot when they put the crown in and it was painful. Is it possible that replacing the temp with the permanent without anethesia inflammed the nerve? It's been 2 weeks since the permanent was put in and another 7 days since the bite was checked. ...Visitor from WI

Answer:
These are all questions you should direct to your dentist.

If the tooth was sensitive, why didn't the dentist give you anesthesia? Cementation of a crown can result in sensitivity when: there is an inflamed nerve to begin with, there is contamination or if the tooth is hitting too hard.

Your lack of symptoms during the time your tooth had the temporary crown means there is a good chance it will calm down again with time, providing the bite is right and the crown fits well!

Your dentist may want to try anti-inflammatories and checking your bite again. In any case, inform your dentist of all of your symptoms and they should address your concerns.

If the nerve won't calm down there is always a chance a root canal procedure (removing the nerve) will be needed to resolve your problem if all else fails.
