Question:
Crown Fit: How tightly should a crown fit?

I am currently having an upper crown made, and it is so loose that it falls off unless the dentist puts fit checker in it in order to check the fit with a partial denture. Is it too loose? ...Visitor from NJ

Answer:
Usually a traditional porcelain fused to metal crown or an all metal crown has a relatively snug fit and will stay in place while being tried in.

With the use of newer bonded cements and newer crowns which are bonded, as opposed to cemented, there is an increased "spacer" to allow room for cement and to place the crown passively. These crowns can be all ceramic, other non-metal materials or crowns with a very thin metal coping inside.

All of these are placed more passively and rely on the layer of luting material to join them to the tooth structure. I wouldn't be concerned so long as this tooth stays in place well once inserted with a permanent cement.
