Crowns Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Tooth exposure above crown and tooth aching: I had eight crowns on my upper front teeth.

My tooth shows and is exposed above the crowns. Four of the teeth ache and the gum is still sensitive more than six weeks later. The teeth are large and protrude and I need to wet my lips and make moves with my mouth to close my mouth.

Look like I have buck teeth. What can I do? ...Visitor from MD

Answer:
Speak to your dentist. They should be understanding of your concerns and discuss options with you.

The first issue is to find out why you have pain and take care of it! You may have a pulpitus or inflamed nerve which may require a root canal(s) or removal of the nerve(s).

Then the tooth or teeth may need posts and cores and new crowns. If the dentist feels they can satisfy your esthetic requirements by adjusting these crowns, they may want to try that before removing them and risking further injury to the teeth.

If this can satisfy your concerns, possible gum lift or soft tissue grafting may cover exposed root sufaces.

So to summarize, ask your dentist your options, see if adjustments can be made to satisfy you esthetically. Then find and solve the source of the pain.

Lastly, if the temporaries were fine (you never mentioned this), were the crowns made to duplicate the shapes and sizes of the approved temporary crowns?

You need to make sure that if the crowns are re-done, you will be happy next time. If this dentist can' t satisfy you, get a second opinion
