Question:
Painful teeth after crown placed: I had 3 crowns: 2 full and 1 half to the back left side of my mouth 3 months ago.

I am still having pain and taking NSAIDs (Non Steriodal Anti-Inflamatory Drugs) to relieve the pain at least 1-2 days. I am filing a dispute with that Dentist for another issue.

I do not want to see that dentist again. Is pain normal after crowns are placed? Could I go to another Dentist to fix it if not normal? ...Visitor California

Answer:
Is pain normal after a crown? ... NO.

Can there be pain after a crown in a small percentage of people? ...YES.

Dentists make a big effort to treat patients with a goal of no pain after treatment. The reason there is pain after placing a crown is possibly due to the condition of the tooth before treatment.

The dentist may have done everything perfectly and there still is pain. This is not the fault of the dentist.

Why? Most of the time when a crown is necessary there is a big cavity inside the tooth and the tooth is infected with bacteria. The dentist can do a great job working on the tooth but, the germs may have gone too far inside the tooth.

There is nothing the dentist could have done except perhaps a root canal before placing the crown. Most dentists do not want to over treat the patient and do not want to do root canals unnecessarily.

The best method is to medicate the tooth and if pain does develop over the next several years, then do the root canal only to the teeth that absolutely need it. This type of care is called conservative.

If you were a dentist and if you treated 100 teeth with crowns, a certain percentage will need root canals no matter how great the dentist.
