Crowns Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Crowns don't cover teeth: I have crowns that are sealed but not covering my teeth completely.

They are sensitive when brushing and rinsing. I haven't had them long. When should they be replaced?

Is the tooth not being covered but sealed a problem? ...Visitor from NM

Answer:
The sealing of the crowns is the most important aspect of the crown's longevity if all other factors such as esthetics and occlusion are good.

Why didn't the dentist cover the entire root? You should have the dentist desensitize the roots, check your bite and adjust it if need be and then see if your sensitivity goes away.

You may have a pulpitis or inflammation of the nerve but most of the time sensitivity is from the bite being too high.

Your crowns should last 7-10 years or longer if done well and maintained with good oral hygiene. Your dentist should discuss these issues with you.
