Question:
I have two front teeth that have porcelain crowns. They are about ten years old, and both recently cracked. Then a large piece broke off. I have managed to replace the pieces with adhesive, but both crowns need to be replaced. My dentist tells me I need root canals before he can replace them, thus adding to the expense. Is this necessary? ...Shona in IN

Answer:
Shona, I'm not sure without testing your teeth. Your dentist should see how your teeth react to hot and cold. Abnormal or lack of sensation to hot and cold could indicate the need for a root canal due to a necrotic tooth.

Sometimes teeth can die after years of wearing crowns and re-doing them could further irritate the pulps pre-disposing your teeth to need for root canals. Your dentist is being cautious. If he puts the crowns on and then you end up needing root canals you could end up damaging the crowns to do the root canals. Make sure your dentist has properly tested your teeth. It sounds like you're on the right track.
