Crowns Ask The Dentist James Sanderson

Question:
I recently had an upper molar crowned. The tooth previous to that had a root canal through a large filling. My dentist crowned the tooth right on top of the temporary material the endodontist filled the tooth with which was also minus back and side tooth structure. When I bite down on the crown after not chewing for awhile I get a foul taste in my mouth. It seems to me that the crown is not sealed or the temporary material is giving under the crown forcing collecting material out. I have other crowns and they do not do this. The foul taste started emanating from the crown the day after it was installed and has been consistently occuring. Does this crown need to be replaced? ... Visitor from MO

Answer:
Personally I would suggest that you get back with the dentist and ask him these questions. Is this a new dentist for you? If so why did you change to someone else when you seemed to have a good relationship in the past where you got work done that you were more comfortable with. The most cost efficient way to see the dentist is to develop a relationship with someone you can trust and stay with that person for your lifetime. Once that trust is not there then you need to see someone else.

The problem may be simply a gum problem around the tooth or something stuck in between somewhere it is just difficult to tell by osmosis. But I bet the dentist that you saw can help you. My biggest concern in situations like this is that there is a crack somewhere in the tooth and that may be a bigger problem.

That is the reason I would suggest that you return to the dentist that did this work for you and see if you can develop some trust with each other.
