Question:
I have 4 porcelain on metal crowns. At least 3 of them are sensitive to pressure when chewing anything that places direct pressure on the tooth when biting down. I noticed with the latest crown that it sometimes feels like biting on a piece of aluminum foil.

Is it the metal I have a reaction to? How can the pressure sensitivity be taken care of? Would porecelain or porcelain on gold crowns in the future be a better choice? I'm hoping there is another solution other than root canals. ... Visitor from CA

Answer:
If these are new crowns than a certain amount of sensitivity is expected. If this has been an ongoing issue, you should ask your dentist to check this out and especially look at your bite to be sure you are not hitting the crowns high.

The standard of care of a very long time has been porcelain bonded to metal (pbm) crowns. The newer all porcelain crowns are very good but extremely technique sensitive and can break if not done properly. If you have pbm crowns on your teeth and everything checks out ok with the bite and fit, then you could need rootcanal treatment to solve the problem.

It all depends on the specific situation you have, the bite, the amount of tooth removed, the amount of decay or broblem before crowns, if a crown buildup was done... The pain you are mentioning sounds like a high bite and this is the most common problem with a new crown. Have this checked out first.
