Crowns Ask The Dentist James Sanderson Question:
I had a crown and root canal done 18 years ago. Two years ago my dentist replaced this crown. About 8 weeks ago this crown chipped and came off. They just replaced this crown on Tuesday. On Thursday it was sore to the touch but not to bad. It is now Sunday and it has absessed.

Can you tell me what has caused this? I don't understand how a crown with a root canal 18 years ago can do this. Thank you. ...Visitor from Mississippi

Answer:
Since you just had this crown replaced a couple of things come to mind:

One... ??? what happened to cause the old crown to crack? When that happened you may have cracked the root of the tooth as well..... Which may mean ... I hope not.... that you may not be able to save the tooth. That could be the worst case scenario.

If the tooth had a silver point root canal done that could mean that the silver point inside the tooth has corroded and the manipulation to do the crown could have loosened it up and now the tooth needs to be retreated. They may have tried to avoid that for you but it may still need to be done.

Or there could be a number of different scenarios that could lead you to need a root canal treatment again. The deal is that you may just have had a low grade of infection for a long time that now has become acute again.... ???? Hopefully there is no crack involved which makes this much more complicated to solve.

Two - which is the possibility that you hope for:
I hope that the crown is just high for some reason and all that you need to have done is to adjust the bite. In either case it would be a good idea to let your dentist know that you are having a problem. If you call the office they may have an after hours number you can call and then they can help you plan for tomorrow or possibly see you tonight if you are having that much trouble.
