Crowns Ask The Dentist James Sanderson Question:
I recently went to the dentist because I lost a gigantic piece of filling from my last molar on the top right side. The dentist told me that part of the filling was still in the tooth and that the tooth was broken so I would need a crown and/or a root canal.

I am an unemployed student with no dental insurance so I told my dentist I could not afford the cost of a crown. They told me that I could get a temporary crown until I could afford a permanent one. But how long will this temporary crown last?

My dentist's office told me it could last for a few months, but everything I've read has said they last for a few weeks. What is the best option here? I really cannot afford a $900 procedure right now. Are there other, less expensive options? I also grind my teeth so I'm worried that a temporary crown would just break immediately. I'm almost tempted to just get it pulled, but this seems extreme.

I've made the appointment for a temporary crown, but don't want to waste my money on something that won't last. I'm hoping to have dental insurance (and a job) again soon, but am not sure if the temporary crown will last that long. ...Visitor from MA

Answer:
It sounds like you are in a difficult time of your life. And it sounds like Dentistry is complicating the problem. I am sorry that you are in this situation. However, It is not something that is impossible to deal with.

If you were my sister I would go ahead and put the temporary crown in place.

I worked on a patient today that had 2 temporary crowns placed by me 15 years ago. The temporary crowns need to be replaced (they are stable) but another tooth in the area was broken and things are different for her now and she can afford the work..... She could only do 1 crown. We did the one in trouble.... We will do the others later.

I can not tell you that this will be the case for you but it is possible. I saw it in action today. If you believe in yourself and your ability to make positive changes in your life then get the temporary crown. If not have the tooth removed... it is cheaper... in every respect.

Yet it may cost you more in the long run....So.... If you believe in yourself and believe that your body is the most important asset you have then save the tooth and do what is necessary to take care of this most intimate part of your body.

Ask your dentist to help you stop the down hill run that you sound like you are in with your mouth. You will be positively surprised I believe if you approach it like that. I hope this helps.... If not let me know.
