Question:
I have crowns on my top 7 front teeth that look black at the gums. What can be done about that. I haven't had them very long... only about 3 months. Should I have had Porcelain veneers? The crowns even cost me more. I am so unhappy about this, they cost me $720.00 a crown and I am very unhappy about the way they look. Now I am afraid to get the bottoms done. ...Visitor from VA

Answer:
From the description you give there are a few reasons which may be giving rise to this condition:

1. The teeth may have been black before the crowns due to the teeth being dead and discoloring. If this is the situation then the gum tissues have pulled away from the crowns (receeded) and the roots are now showing.

2. The crowns which where placed may have a metal margin (rim) around it which is either showing through the thin gums or the gums have receeded and the metal is showing.

The solution to both of these problems would be to replace the crowns with an all procelain crown and placing the finish margin (where the crown ends) just below the gum line.

3. The third situation which would be unlikely, but needs to be addressed, is that of Heavy Metal Poision. If you have been exposed to heavy metals (such as lead) then the metal will sometimes deposit itself in the gum tissue themselves. This will usally be seen as a line across all of the gums both top and bottom.
