Question:
Last summer I had my very first root canal and crown. It took the dentist office five hours to create and fit the crown. They made several molds before they found one that seemed to fit.

Approximately two weeks later I was back in their office because the crown was not comfortable. The dentist informed me that it had shifted out of place and she pushed on the crown and informed me it should feel better. Since then this crown has been very bothersome to me because food gets lodged up in the crevices of the crown. i.e. there is a space on the right side.

I never had trouble with food getting stuck in this area before. Now, it appears that the crown is absessed because the gum area above the crown is black. Should there be any empty space where the crown touches the gum line? (this is where food is getting stuck). ...Visitor from FL

Answer:
Sorry about your disappointing dental result. It is obvious you want the work redone and I have some suggestions that will make you a better dental consumer.

Most dentists are willing to redo unsatisfactory work within a reasonable period of time, usually one year. Talk to him and see what you can work out.

Although some crowns are 100% porcelain, most crowns contain metal underneath to strengthen the porcelain. It is common for the gums to shrink slightly after having a crown placed. This can reveal a "black" line, which is the metal substructure of the crown. There should be no crevice unless your tooth had a crevice to begin with.
