Question:
Crowns and overbite: I went to the dentist and thinking I was getting porcelain veneers on my front top 6 teeth and crowns for the back 7 teeth. After the prep was done I went in for the final. But to my surprise, I did not get veneers, I got porcelain crowns. I was shocked. The dentist then insisted that they were veneers.

After I pressed a little he said I had big fillings and I had to have these kind. What does that mean? Now my whole look is way different to my expectation. My problem now is that my top teeth hang over my bottom teeth. When I eat I hit the back of the top teeth.

He shaved them down a little but I told him they still hang over the bottom teeth. He said that was to fix my bite. He said this is normal. I have been looking at everyone's teeth and I don't think it is normal. I believe the bite is wrong.

I also have been stuttering on words I never have before. Does this sound normal? Are my teeth supposed to be over the bottom teeth? ...Visitor from SC

Answer:
A normal Bite would have the very front (central incisors) covering the bottom teeth by 1-3mm and the length of the front teeth at 10.5-12.5 mm long.

You may not have had an Ideal Bite to begin with and now the teeth are a little to long. Oftentimes we will make teeth longer for esthetic reasons and it will take some time before you get used to them.

The length would have been the same if they were done as crowns or veneers. The crowns may be adding tooth structure to the back of the tooth and making the bottom teeth hit at a different angle than they did before. Again as long as there is no pain time will take care of the new position of the bite.

With out a picture I do not know if the teeth are to long or excessively over the bottom. I would suggest waiting for a short time and if you are still unhappy a consult with an aesthetic dentist or a prosthedontist would be appropriate.
