Question:
Dark Line between Gums and Crowns: I have 12 crowns including front teeth that have a definite line. Some were showing when I first received crowns.

Now it is much much worse. Is there any procedure available to fill in this space other than all new crowns, which is too costly? It is so unsightly. ...Visitor from KS

Answer:
Because porcelain is not a very user friendly material to tissue, frequently all dentists and patients see and experience the migration of the tissues around the margins, leaving the result your have experienced.

From a practical standpoint there really is not a fix. However assuming the crowns all fit and are in good repair you may explore the slim possibility that a periodontist or gum specialist MAY be able to graft some tissue over this area.

IF it is possible the tissue color would look different and that result may be more unacceptable than your original complaint. If these exposed margins only show up when you are standing in front of a mirror, opening wide under close inspection and not during your normal smile then any change may not be necessary. Good luck!
